Prior to Joseph’s martyrdom, he gave the keys he received to the Twelve Apostles. The Twelve initially presided over the Church, led by Brigham Young. Before the Saints left Nauvoo, many received their temple ordinances. Trials and miracles accompanied them as they departed Nauvoo.
